The Altec 802-8G driver is one of the finest small format h.f. drivers ever built IMHO. I respect many JBL products--they blow away many other brands, but that Altec driver is hard to beat--easily the equal of the 902-8A that came after it. FYI, GPA is manufacturing brand new 802-8G drivers!
Being of "Sound" Mind
The JBL are likely titanium fram. IMHO the 802 wins. I do not like the sound of titanium. With older aluminum frams, or Conexant beryllium, or even Radian frams, the JBL is improved, at that point matter of taste. JBL is more colored, with a bit more highs. To me the Altec is more natural sounding. Go over to LH and you will get derogatory remarks and a recommendation for the JBL. Some really good people there but some incredibly rude ones too.

i don't believe that the beryllium diaphragms for the 1" exit drivers are available as of yet....
rumour has them available 'in the future'

I kinda like Tomt's suggestion to keep both on hand.
I would hands down prefer the 802G for hifi apps in a normal/average size listening room.
For bigger rooms, high SPL apps, or any significant "duty" i'll take the 2425 for it's ruggedness and high output ability. It's a bit more sensitive and will handle considerably more power than the 802.
2425 will do a great job punching the crispness of a live performance to the furthest reaches of a 500 seat club.
802G will do a great job of rendering a live performance in your living room from a good source.
